Exposition "Nouvelles d'Anticythère : cinq années de fouilles sur la plus célèbre épave de l’Antiquité"

Sculptures, amphores et une mystérieuse machine vieille de 2200 ans, considérée comme le premier calculateur du monde : l’épave d’Anticythère continue de livrer ses secrets.
Depuis 2021, les fouilles menées par l’Unité d’archéologie classique de l’UNIGE et l’École suisse d’archéologie en Grèce (ESAG), en collaboration avec le Ministère grec de la Culture, enrichissent notre compréhension de ce site exceptionnel.

L’exposition « Nouvelles d’Anticythère » invite le public à plonger dans les profondeurs de la Méditerranée grâce à des dispositifs immersifs : drones sous-marins, maquettes interactives, vidéos de plongée…
Un voyage à travers 125 ans de découvertes, des premiers plongeurs grecs à Cousteau, avec des reproductions de l’Éphèbe d’Anticythère et du fameux calculateur antique.

Exposition Nouvelles

The 2026 ESAG fieldwork and museum program is now available online. It features excavations in the Eretria countryside and underwater research in the harbour of Eretria (Euboea), as well as survey around the Hellanion Oros (Aigina). A variety of museum studies (Helladic to Classical pottery, architecture, conservation, inscriptions) is offered in Eretria and Aigina. The program is currently awaiting approval from the Greek archaeological authorities.

Amarynthos ~ Study of the Bronze and Iron Weapons and Tools ⚒️
During one month, Dr. Azzurra Scarci (LEIZA) was working at the museum of Eretria on the bronze and iron weapons and tools found within the temple of Artemis at Amarynthos 🏛️, thus finalizing the collection of data for her contribution to the publication forthcoming. With the help of Charis Giannoulopoulos, head restorer, they also took a close look at the X-ray images of the objects.

Clemens Krause (1934–2025)
With the passing of Clemens Krause on October 24, 2025, one of the last pioneers of the early Swiss excavations at Eretria disappears. Born in 1934, he trained in architecture before pursuing classical archaeology at the University of Basel. This dual training shaped the focus of his research and publications throughout his life.
In April 1964, Karl Schefold, then director of the Greco-Swiss Mission at Eretria, entrusted him with the study of the West Gate. The final publication of the monument, in two volumes, appeared in 1972 (ERETRIA IV). Clemens Krause’s research at Eretria extended beyond the mere excavation of this imposing monument. Indeed, he continually reflected on the city’s archaic urbanism. His bold hypothesis of channeling the river eastward was long disputed before being confirmed by several later excavations.
From 1973 to 1977, he held a teaching position in archaeology at the University of Fribourg before being appointed director of the Swiss Institute in Rome, a post he held from 1977 to 1985. From 1978 to 1982, he also accepted the part-time role of director of the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece. In collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, he contributed in 1975 to the design and implementation of the master plan (Richtplan) of the modern city.
During his years at the helm of the Swiss Institute in Rome, he launched an ambitious research project on the Domus Tiberiana, at the summit of the Palatine Hill in Rome. He also focused on other monuments in Italy: the Pyramid of Cestius in Rome, the Schola–Casa del Traiano in Ostia, and the Villa Jovis in Capri.
Clemens Krause held teaching positions at the Universities of Fribourg, Neuchâtel, and Geneva, as well as at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
A multifaceted and richly talented personality, with inexhaustible curiosity and expertise in archaeology, architecture, and urbanism, Clemens Krause left a lasting mark on the field of archaeology in Switzerland, Italy, and Greece.

Since 1964, Swiss archaeologists have been exploring the ancient city of Eretria, on the island of Euboea. More recently, excavations near Amarynthos have led to the discovery of the Sanctuary of Artemis, the most renowned place of cult of the Eretrians.
The School also supports Swiss archaeological projects elsewhere in Greece and publishes its own Series.
